The protest, conducted near the Prime Minister’s residence, centered around the ongoing controversy involving the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). AAP MP Sanjay Singh contended that the government strategically permitted the protest to distract from the student movement demanding answers regarding the NEET paper leak. According to Singh, this move undermined the broader public campaign.
Atishi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, raised concerns about the government’s handling of protests. She noted the apparent discrepancy in treatment, highlighting that while student activists and protesters have faced restrictions and police interventions during their demonstrations near Parliament, Rahul Gandhi was allowed to hold his protest close to the Prime Minister’s residence. Moreover, his protest attracted a rapid response from government officials.
During the protest, Union Minister Jitendra Singh engaged directly with Rahul Gandhi, assuring him that the government was willing to address NEET-related issues within the Parliament. Despite this assurance, the situation culminated in the detention of Rahul Gandhi and several Congress MPs by the police, effectively ending the protest.
This series of events has exposed a growing rift among opposition parties. The AAP has criticized what it perceives as unequal treatment of protests, arguing that Congress’s actions may inadvertently aid the BJP rather than support the overarching student movement seeking justice and accountability in the NEET controversy.
