During a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar faced a terrifying ordeal as he was attacked by his co-pilot. Machchhar, who is currently recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi, recounted the harrowing experience, emphasizing the importance of regaining control to ensure the safety of the passengers on board.
Machchhar’s ordeal began when his co-pilot, an Omani national, launched an unexpected attack in the cockpit. Despite suffering multiple injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to assist by restraining the co-pilot. During the struggle, the Boeing 737, carrying 182 people, began a steep descent before being diverted to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, and the co-pilot has been detained in Saudi Arabia.
In a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Machchhar shared that during the attack, he recited the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu prayer, which he described as a source of strength and courage. His quick thinking and determination were crucial in avoiding a potential tragedy.
Captain Machchhar, who hails from Mumbai, has been with flydubai for approximately four years. Prior to that, he accumulated significant flying experience during his decade-long tenure with SpiceJet. As he recovers from his injuries, the aviation community reflects on his bravery and professionalism during the crisis.
