Delhi-NCR Activates Pollution Control Plan as Air Quality Worsens

The air quality in Delhi-NCR has deteriorated into the poor category, prompting the implementation of Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). With an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 233, authorities have initiated measures aimed at preventing further pollution by addressing dust control, vehicle emissions, waste burning, and industrial activities.

GRAP Stage I is activated when the AQI ranges between 201 and 300. Its primary focus is on reducing pollution at its source through preventive measures and enhanced monitoring. Key actions include controlling construction dust by enforcing dust-management guidelines at construction and demolition sites, banning the open burning of garbage and waste, and encouraging commercial eateries to use cleaner cooking fuels instead of coal and firewood.

Further measures involve regulating the use of diesel generators, monitoring visibly polluting vehicles, and enforcing compliance with industrial emission standards. Traffic management strategies are also in place to reduce congestion and encourage motorists to switch off engines at red lights. Residents are advised to maintain their vehicles, avoid unnecessary engine idling, use public transport where possible, and report pollution-related issues through designated government channels.

The current air quality poses a risk of breathing discomfort, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions or other health issues. Authorities are committed to continuous monitoring and implementing preventive measures to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the region.

Alongside these efforts, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 18°C, with daytime highs expected to reach around 31°C. Temperature readings from various monitoring stations in the city ranged from 17.7°C to 19.1°C. Authorities remain vigilant, aiming to improve air quality and safeguard public health by ensuring strict adherence to the GRAP measures.
