India and Poland Strengthen Cooperation in Defence, Technology, and Nuclear Energy

India and Poland have agreed to enhance their collaboration across several strategic sectors, including defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This development follows discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who are aiming to expand economic ties and double bilateral trade by the year 2030.

The leaders identified key opportunities for joint development and production in areas such as defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. Furthermore, they discussed potential collaborations in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi extended an invitation to Polish companies to collaborate with India on co-development and co-production initiatives, while Tusk emphasized the importance of diversifying access to critical minerals and strategic resources to bolster economic security.

Currently, bilateral trade between India and Poland stands at approximately $6.3 billion, with both nations aspiring to double this figure by 2030. A delegation of nearly 100 Polish companies is actively exploring business prospects in sectors like defence, agricultural technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.

In addition to economic cooperation, defence remains a key area of focus. India and Poland are working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to facilitate closer defence-industrial collaboration. Plans are also underway to establish a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue, with the joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies being considered.

The two countries also plan to establish a bilateral startup bridge and develop partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will further create opportunities for exports and investments.

Beyond economic and defence matters, regional and international issues were also on the agenda, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and developments in West Asia. Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace, while Polish officials voiced their approval of New Delhi’s calls for a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

The meeting underscored the longstanding people-to-people connections between the two countries, noting Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and the historical support provided to Polish refugees in India during World War II. Overall, this meeting represents a significant step in strengthening India-Poland relations, as both nations seek to expand trade, enhance strategic cooperation, and build more resilient supply chains.
