A meeting intended to bring together Iran and several Gulf nations in Oman has been postponed, following requests from some regional governments for a delay. This decision, made collaboratively by Tehran and Muscat, was confirmed by Iranian state media. However, Iranian officials did not specify which countries had sought the postponement.
Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi also verified the deferment of the meeting, which was initially set to occur in Salalah. He emphasized that the decision was taken to ensure regional consensus and reiterated Oman’s dedication to fostering dialogue aimed at enhancing stability and fostering long-term cooperation in the region.
The agenda for the meeting was expected to address a variety of regional matters, notably potential strategies for managing maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is crucial as it represents one of the world’s key oil transit routes. Both Iran and Oman have engaged in bilateral discussions concerning protocols for vessel movement in this strategic passage.
Oman, which controls the coastline opposite the strait, has previously indicated that these discussions have received backing from other Gulf Arab states. The delay in the meeting occurs amidst escalating tensions in the area. Given that the Strait of Hormuz is vital for a substantial portion of global oil shipments, any disruption to its maritime traffic poses a significant threat to international energy markets.
