In the wake of catastrophic floods and landslides, Malaysia is waiting for clearance from Nepal to send a team of DNA experts to assist in identifying victims. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced that Malaysia has sought permission for this deployment, with the DNA identification process set to commence following the conclusion of search and rescue operations. The specialists are tasked with comparing DNA samples from the bodies recovered to those provided by the families of Malaysian citizens who have gone missing due to the natural disasters.
To prepare for this effort, Malaysia has proactively gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who have not been accounted for. Given the constraints of local facilities, some bodies were buried hastily, underscoring the critical need for DNA testing to confirm identities. The intention is to provide closure to families who are anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones.
The Malaysian team, consisting of 11 personnel, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue tools. Their arsenal includes advanced detection devices, communication gear, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Alongside this, they have brought a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to navigate the challenging terrain and assist in the ongoing rescue efforts.
Malaysia’s comprehensive approach, combining search, rescue, and DNA identification, aims to locate those who remain missing and deliver definitive answers to their families. The collaboration with Nepal is a crucial step as both nations work together to address the aftermath of the disasters and provide needed support to the affected communities.
