India is advancing its plans to purchase an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, following a cost proposal submitted by Moscow to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The decision on this acquisition will ultimately rest with India’s Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent upon successful price negotiations and approval from the Finance Ministry. The existing contract for five S-400 systems, which was signed in 2018 for a total of $5.43 billion, is on track to conclude with the delivery of the last system by November 2026.
The acquisition of these additional systems is intended to bolster India’s air defense capabilities, particularly along its eastern border with China. The S-400 systems have previously proven their value, notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, where their performance has been reported as a significant factor in strengthening India’s case for expanding its S-400 fleet.
At the same time, India has yet to make a decision regarding the procurement of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Although the Indian Air Force has shown interest in this proposal, especially in the context of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, no final decision has been made.
The discussions surrounding the proposed S-400 acquisition are expected to be a key element in broader defense talks between India and Russia. These discussions are set to gain further prominence with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit scheduled in September.
