In a decisive move to combat drug trafficking, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap on Sunday, aiming to halt the flow of illegal narcotics across India’s borders. The comprehensive plan zeroes in on three critical facets: curbing the supply of drugs, diminishing the demand for them, and reducing the harm they cause. Since 2019, the government has been engaged in a concerted national campaign to dismantle drug networks, Shah emphasized.
Highlighting the robust strategies being implemented, Shah spoke of the four-tier NCORD mechanism designed to streamline anti-narcotics operations across the country. Additionally, Anti-Narcotics Task Forces have been established in every state and Union Territory to intensify enforcement efforts. Complementing these measures is a national rehabilitation helpline and the NIDAN database, which catalogues narcotics offenders. The government is also employing data-driven techniques to map drug networks and identify hotspots of illicit activity.
Shah presented staggering figures to underscore the campaign’s impact. Between 2020 and July 2026, enforcement agencies confiscated over 29,968 kg of synthetic drugs, valued at more than ₹19,600 crore. Over the broader period from 2019 to July 2026, the total amount of narcotic and psychotropic substances seized surpassed 93.34 lakh kg. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to disrupting the supply chain of illegal drugs in India.
Further illustrating the crackdown on drug-related crimes, Shah noted that authorities seized properties worth ₹1,841 crore across 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026. These actions are not only targeting the drugs themselves but also the extensive financial networks that support and profit from the drug trade. Such measures are crucial in dismantling the economic backbone of drug cartels operating in the region.
During his visit to Goa, Shah reviewed the state’s security preparedness before returning to the capital, Delhi. His visit underscores the central government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that state-level responses are aligned with national objectives in the fight against narcotics. The roadmap for Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 represents a significant step forward in India’s battle against drug abuse and trafficking.
