The internal discord within Shiv Sena (UBT) has escalated as two of its Lok Sabha members, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have announced their allegiance to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. This shift marks an increase in the rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, with a total of six MPs now siding with the breakaway group. Ashtikar explained that his move was motivated by a scarcity of development funds in his constituency and dissatisfaction with comments directed at rebel MPs. He asserted that his allegiance to Shiv Sena’s ideology remains unchanged, emphasizing that his decision was merely a switch from one faction of the party to another to better serve his electoral region.
Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, while confirming his departure, indicated that he would still engage in consultations with his constituency’s supporters to determine his future political path. Despite the political schism, he expressed a commitment to refrain from criticizing Uddhav or Aaditya Thackeray. The ongoing political turmoil has not diminished his respect for the Thackeray family, he stated, underscoring his intent to navigate the situation without adding to the hostilities.
On the other hand, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that not all rebel MPs have severed ties, with some maintaining contact with the party. Raut suggested that these MPs are wary of potential backlash from their constituency’s electorate. He also mentioned the party’s openness to dialogue with those considering a return to the fold, emphasizing a willingness to reconcile the differences.
In response to the defections, the Uddhav Thackeray faction has commenced disciplinary measures against the six MPs by issuing new show-cause notices. They warned of potential actions under the anti-defection law, should the MPs fail to justify their actions. Party leaders are contemplating appealing to the Lok Sabha Speaker to disqualify these MPs if they do not respond appropriately to the notices.
The defections have heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, as both factions exchange allegations while the BJP denies any involvement in instigating the split. The situation remains fluid, with party dynamics in the state being closely watched as the Shiv Sena factions navigate this period of upheaval.
