India-Canada Trade Surges as Modi’s December Visit Nears

Merchandise trade between India and Canada has surged with double-digit growth in the first eight months of 2026, highlighting a strengthened economic relationship ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Canada in December. This increase underscores the growing momentum in bilateral ties, as both nations work towards enhancing trade and investment partnerships.

During this period, Canada’s merchandise exports to India rose to CA$3.03 billion, marking a 36.7% increase compared to the same timeframe the previous year. The surge in exports was driven predominantly by metals and minerals, which made up 41% of the shipments, followed by agri-food products at 16.9%. On the import side, Canada received CA$7.05 billion worth of goods from India, a 10.2% increase from the prior year.

In 2025, Canadian exports to India totaled CA$3.9 billion, while imports from India were CA$9.7 billion, indicating an ongoing and robust trade relationship. This growth in merchandise trade is complemented by high-level discussions and business initiatives aimed at further strengthening bilateral engagement. A Canadian trade delegation, consisting of nearly 300 participants, recently secured 34 commercial agreements valued at approximately CA$300 million across sectors like energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

Additionally, India and Canada are advancing negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), having completed five rounds of talks. Further discussions are planned as both countries aim to finalize the agreement by December, potentially enhancing trade and cooperation in various sectors.

Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have engaged in discussions to bolster bilateral relations. Meanwhile, officials from both nations continue to explore opportunities to expand trade, investment, and cooperation, particularly in areas such as mobility.
