Delhi’s infrastructure development is set to take a significant leap forward with the imminent opening of the Barapullah Phase III elevated corridor. Scheduled to open to the public on September 29, this long-awaited project promises to enhance connectivity between East Delhi, including Mayur Vihar, and Noida, while offering a smoother transit to key areas in South Delhi.
This new 3.5-kilometer elevated stretch will connect Mayur Vihar Phase I with Sarai Kale Khan, integrating seamlessly with the existing Barapullah corridor. This extension aims to provide commuters with a largely signal-free route, potentially reducing travel times from East Delhi and Noida to South Delhi areas such as AIIMS. Current travel durations of 35 to 40 minutes could decrease significantly to about 15 minutes, depending on traffic conditions and starting points.
The corridor features a four-lane roadway, complete with a bridge over the Yamuna River, nine traffic-distribution loops, and connecting ramps. Additionally, it includes a dedicated cycle track and pedestrian facilities, promoting alternative and sustainable modes of transportation.
Approved in 2014, the construction of this project began in 2015. However, various challenges, including land acquisition hurdles, necessary clearances, and delays exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have pushed back its completion. Consequently, the project’s cost has escalated from an initial estimate of ₹1,260 crore to approximately ₹1,635 crore.
With major structures, such as the Yamuna bridge and the connecting ramps, already completed, the final touches are being put in place for the corridor’s debut. As Delhi prepares for this infrastructure upgrade, commuters and city planners alike look forward to the benefits of improved connectivity and reduced travel times across key regions of the city.
