India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a hard-fought 19-run victory over Pakistan in an electrifying final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. The triumph allowed India to defend its title successfully, further solidifying its dominance over Pakistan in T20 internationals.
Opting to bat first, India set a formidable target of 211/6, thanks to a blazing start by Abhishek Sharma and a crucial late surge by Tilak Varma. Abhishek’s rapid half-century propelled India to 81/2 during the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20Is. However, Pakistan’s bowlers, including Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to regain some control in the middle overs by taking critical wickets and slowing India’s momentum.
Despite this, Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls turned the tide back in India’s favor. His 62-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who added 27 runs, helped India surpass the 200-run threshold, leaving Pakistan with a challenging chase ahead.
Pakistan’s response was spirited, led by Hasan Nawaz’s outstanding performance. Nawaz remained unbeaten on 96 from 51 balls and formed a significant 87-run partnership with Saim Ayub, putting pressure on the Indian team. Yet, India’s bowlers managed to wrest control back in the game’s final stages. Washington Sundar delivered a pivotal 18th over, while Jasprit Bumrah kept the pressure on in the penultimate over.
Facing a daunting requirement of 33 runs in the final over, Pakistan could not overcome the target, as Shivam Dube successfully defended, securing India’s 19-run victory. This win not only retained India’s Asian Games gold medal but also underscored their continued supremacy in T20 contests against Pakistan.
