London Marathon’s 2027 Expansion Promises Economic Boost with Two-Day Format

The London Marathon is set to break new ground in 2027 by transforming into a two-day event, a move that will accommodate an unprecedented number of participants. Scheduled for the weekend of April 24th and 25th, this unique format will allow for 100,000 runners to take part, marking a significant expansion from previous years. The decision comes in response to an overwhelming demand, evidenced by the 1.3 million entries into the public ballot. Despite this increase in capacity, the likelihood of securing a spot remains slim, with less than 10% of entrants expected to be successful.

With the expanded event, organizers anticipate raising over £150 million for charity, positioning it as the largest fundraising event in the history of UK sports. Additionally, the marathon is expected to bring about £400 million in social and economic benefits. This considerable impact highlights the marathon’s role not only as a sporting event but also as a major contributor to charitable and economic activity in the region.

The marathon weekend will be carefully structured, with the elite women’s, elite female para-athletes, championship, and “Good for Age” women’s races taking place on one of the days. This will coincide with a mass participation event involving nearly 50,000 runners. The following day will feature the elite men’s race as the main event, alongside another mass participation race of similar size. This arrangement ensures that participants can only compete on one day, maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of the event.

Ballot results are slated to be released in early July, providing hopeful participants with the outcome of their entry attempts. The two-day format, while ambitious, is confirmed to be a one-off celebration, with future editions of the London Marathon expected to revert to their traditional single-day schedule. This temporary change reflects the marathon’s adaptability and commitment to inclusivity, allowing more runners to experience the iconic course.
