The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has unveiled new guidelines that expand recharge options for prepaid mobile users, emphasizing flexibility in plan selection. The regulations mandate telecom providers like Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea to offer plans specifically catering to voice and SMS services, with available durations of 30 days or shorter, paralleling existing bundled plans.
As per the newly instituted Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, these voice-and-SMS-only plans are designed to meet the needs of customers who primarily utilize their phones for calls and messaging, without the necessity for mobile data. In addition to shorter-term options, TRAI requires operators to introduce at least one extended-duration voice-and-SMS-only plan that aligns with their longer data-inclusive plans.
A significant aspect of the new rules is the standardization of plan renewal dates. Monthly plans are now set to renew on the same date each month. Should this date be absent in a given month, the renewal will occur on that month’s final day, ensuring consistency and predictability for consumers.
This move follows previous directions issued by TRAI in December 2024, which aimed to broaden the availability of voice-and-SMS-only plans across various validity periods. TRAI found that telecom operators had not thoroughly implemented these options, prompting the latest regulatory update.
The introduction of these provisions is poised to offer additional choices for prepaid users, particularly benefiting senior citizens and those seeking cost-effective plans devoid of data services. By enhancing plan diversity, TRAI aims to cater to a broader consumer base, accommodating different user preferences and financial considerations.
