Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, a trip that promises to enhance India’s strategic, economic, and maritime ties with a crucial Indo-Pacific partner. India and Indonesia, both major democracies in the region and members of the G20, are eager to broaden cooperation across various sectors such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defense, and maritime security. This visit follows the Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s journey to India in January 2025, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. During that occasion, they signed agreements in health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
Despite the strong historical connections and shared interests, trade between India and Indonesia remains around $30 billion. Both countries are keen to tap into the greater economic potential that exists, with India particularly interested in increasing investments in Indonesia. Key sectors for potential investment include critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security.
Digital collaboration is poised to be a significant focus during Modi’s visit. Indonesia has shown interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. Both nations are also looking into joint ventures in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses. This could lay the groundwork for a robust digital partnership between the two countries.
Maritime security is another area of shared interest, with discussions expected to emphasize cooperation in the strategically important Strait of Malacca. Plans to enhance naval collaboration, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defense-industrial partnerships are on the agenda. Indonesia’s strategy to diversify its defense suppliers could also present new opportunities for India’s defense sector, potentially strengthening ties further.
The visit is also anticipated to foster more people-to-people connections through enhanced academic, business, and cultural partnerships. By building these relationships, both countries aim to establish a more comprehensive and enduring partnership, reflecting their mutual aspirations and regional significance.
