Arriving in India on Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarked on a four-day trip designed to bolster strategic alliances and expand cooperation in several key areas such as trade, defense, energy, and technology. His itinerary includes crucial bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and an anticipated meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Rubio’s visit aligns with the forthcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) foreign ministers’ gathering, which will involve India, the United States, Japan, and Australia.
Central to the discussions will be issues surrounding Indo-Pacific security, the enhancement of defense collaboration, advancements in critical technologies, and the establishment of resilient supply chains. These topics gain urgency amid growing concerns over China’s increasing influence in the region. Another significant agenda item is trade, particularly following tensions arising from the tariff measures imposed on Indian exports during President Donald Trump’s administration. Both nations are poised to explore avenues to fortify economic cooperation and mitigate trade disputes.
Energy security is expected to be a focal point as well, with the United States aiming to increase its crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to India. Concurrently, discussions are anticipated to touch upon India’s procurement of discounted Russian oil. This dialogue seeks to address energy needs while navigating geopolitical complexities.
Defense ties are projected to remain a cornerstone of the dialogue. India currently utilizes various US-made defense systems, including the Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. The talks are likely to delve into potential joint production efforts and collaborative ventures in advanced defense and space technologies.
Throughout his visit, Rubio will also make stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, he plans to visit the Missionaries of Charity headquarters, the organization founded by Mother Teresa, highlighting the cultural and humanitarian dimensions of his visit.
