The European Union regards India as a crucial strategic ally, underscoring an expanding partnership in various domains including trade, technology, security, and connectivity. Both parties are diligently working toward finalizing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end, which marks a significant step in their bilateral relations.
At the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly emphasized that the EU’s collaboration with India transcends mere trade. It encompasses technology, research, climate action, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. Kelly highlighted the importance of India and the EU fortifying their connections to tackle shared global challenges and to foster sustainable economic growth.
With negotiations for the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement now complete, the formal signing is anticipated to occur by December, potentially coming into effect early next year. This agreement is expected to enhance collaboration in pivotal areas such as defense, security, and emerging technologies, especially in light of evolving global economic and geopolitical climates.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin pointed out that both Europe and India are navigating a changing global environment by seeking greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. He emphasized the significance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring secure global trade routes. Delphin called for intensified India-EU cooperation in maritime security and regional stability, reflecting the shared priorities in their strategic partnership.
