Doval-Wang Yi Talks: Economic Stability Hinges on India-China Border Peace

In a significant diplomatic engagement, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, emphasizing the importance of peace along the shared border for the development of bilateral relations. This meeting marked the 25th round of dialogue between the two nations’ special representatives, focusing on the long-standing boundary dispute. The talks centered on boundary delimitation progress, enhancing border management, and expanding cooperative efforts across the frontier.

Both India and China positively assessed the progress in their bilateral relations and explored ways to maintain stability along the Line of Actual Control. Additionally, the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing a political resolution to the boundary issue, guided by their long-term interests. The recent discussions build on the understanding reached in 2024 between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to de-escalate tensions in the Ladakh region. Following this understanding, initiatives such as people-to-people exchanges and the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra have resumed, along with border trade through designated routes.

Doval highlighted that the gradual normalization of bilateral ties is closely linked to maintaining peace along the border. In response, China emphasized that the boundary issue should be appropriately placed within the broader bilateral relationship. Despite the positive tone of the meeting, neither side disclosed significant details regarding the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary. Both countries agreed to continue negotiations, with the next round of special representative talks scheduled to take place in India in 2027.

The discussions come at a crucial time, as Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India for the BRICS summit in September. This impending visit adds further significance to the ongoing efforts to stabilize bilateral relations. The meeting between Doval and Wang Yi underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to address and manage their differences through dialogue and negotiation, aiming for a long-term resolution to the boundary dispute.
