West Bengal Allocates ₹5 Lakh to Boost 60 Rath Yatra Economies

In a first for the state, the West Bengal government has pledged financial support to enhance the celebration of Rath Yatra festivals, allocating ₹5 lakh each to 60 committees responsible for the care of historic chariots. This initiative is aimed at the preservation and restoration of these traditional wooden chariots, some of which are several centuries old. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the importance of using these funds to ensure the chariots are properly maintained and preserved for future generations.

Beyond the financial aid, the government is orchestrating a ceremonial gesture to honor the devotees participating in the Shravan Yatra. Helicopters will shower flower petals over the 30-km pilgrimage in Tarakeshwar, located in the Hooghly district. This grand display is part of a broader effort to enhance the experience for participants and draw attention to the spiritual significance of the event.

To further support pilgrims, the state is setting up Seva Kendras at 75 different fair locations. These centers will offer vital services such as medical aid, police assistance, and provisions for drinking water, ensuring that attendees have access to essential support as they partake in the festivities.

Looking ahead, the West Bengal government plans to extend financial assistance to more Rath Yatra committees, recognizing the cultural and historical value of these celebrations. Additionally, the state has committed ₹1,000 crore over the next three years to develop the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This ambitious project aims to promote pilgrimage tourism by restoring historic temples and enhancing the region’s appeal as a destination for religious tourism.
